Oscar Micheaux in Roanoke @ The Dumas Center for Artistic & Cultural Development, Roanoke, Va

Join historians, long-time Roanoke residents and Emmy-nominated actor, director and producer, Tim Reid, as they pay homage to Roanoke's historic Henry Street, where renowned African American film pioneer Oscar Micheaux lived and worked during the early 1920's. Mr. Reid, a 1999 recipient of the Oscar Micheaux Award for outstanding lifetime achievement, will screen his highly proclaimed documentary, entitled , "Oscar Micheaux - Legend in Black." This will be followed by a question and answer session regarding his extensive experience in the film industry.

A special highlight of the evening will be our keynote speaker, Tony Brown, commentator of the PBS series "Tony Brown's Journal." Mr. Brown has distinguished himself as a producer, bestselling author, educator, radio host, television commentator and film director. In his latest book release, "What Mama Taught Me," Mr. Brown describes the seven core values given to him by his mother that have sustained his life.

In addition, relive life in Roanoke in the 1920s through a locally written and produced stage play, "South Dakota Flavor." This will be followed by a showing of one of Micheaux' most successful films "Body & Soul," accompanied by the Dave Burrell Trio, who will perform their original musical score.
