In April 2014, HRV invested $6 million of its New Markets Tax Credit allocation to construct a County Market grocery store in Decatur, Illinois. The grocery store is located in a USDA-designated Food Desert with a poverty rate of 23.8%.
The County Market grocery store is 34,500 square feet with a 3,000 square foot convenience store and a gas station.
During construction, the project created 120 construction jobs and 78 permanent positions, the majority have been filled by residents of the local community. Niemann foods, County Markets parent company, is committed to providing training to its employees to prepare them for advancement opportunities.
Niemann Foods also partners with regional schools to provide internship and job opportunities for local students and works with state workforce development agencies to fill positions.
